Young Artists Initiative
Young Artists Initiative (YAI) is the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami’s selective youth arts development program. YAI connects young artists (from 9th through 12th grade) to the museum’s collection and local arts community through an immersive program that explores a different theme or practice each year. Participants are encouraged to look critically at contemporary art practices primarily through interactive studio art workshops designed with the museum’s current exhibitions in mind. Throughout the program students have the opportunity to meet leading local and international contemporary artists, participate in a group exhibition at ICA Miami (10th-12th graders), and create works of art to grow their personal portfolios. YAI creates community by connecting multi-talented teenagers from all over South Florida. Students are also offered additional opportunities including a field trip to Art Basel Miami Beach (TBD), scholarships, internships, and summer job opportunities.
For 2020-2021, Young Artists Initiative YAI’s fall session will takes place virtually on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 10th-12th grades and Wednesdays for 9th grade students. This year’s curriculum will center on reimagination, and will focus on the work of Arthur Jafa, Vivian Cacurri, Lyle Ashton Harris, and Louise Nevelson. Participants will participate in a range of workshops/seminars that center art-making, art history, professional development for high schoolers, and connecting students to established artists. Students will be exposed to nontraditional applications of very traditional materials. Students can choose to participate in the 4:30-5:30 PM session, or the later session from 5:45-6:45 PM.
The program lasts approximately 20 weeks beginning in September and ending in March.
