Anna Park’s large-scale black-and-white compositions are dynamic investigations into vision, memory, and culture. Her works express a gesture and immediacy that conveys movement, transformation, and intimacy and lends the images a quality suspended between abstraction and figuration. Using images found on Google as inspiration, Park describes the frenzied and claustrophobic environments of contemporary American life: a hot dog eating contest gone awry, bureaucrats in a brawl, crowded dance floors, and riders crammed into a subway car.

Reimagining a Thanksgiving gathering during the COVID-19 pandemic, Have It Your Way (2021) centers on swirling hands, faces, and plates filled with food that appear to be in rapid movement. “I imagined a Thanksgiving feast, an iconic scene that I drew from memory and interpreted in my own drawing style,” explains the artist. The work’s title references Burger King’s well-known advertising slogan based on the fast-food chain’s willingness to tailor orders to individual tastes. The title also offers an inside joke between the work and the viewer, and ties the ubiquity of consumerism to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Anna Park (b. 1996, Daegu, South Korea) lives and works in Brooklyn. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at the Drawing Center, New York (2020); Public Art Fund, New York (2020); FLAG Art Foundation, New York (2019); among others. She received a BA from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, and an MFA from New York Academy of Art, New York. She is the First Prize winner of the AXA Art Prize (2019) and the Grand Prize winner of Strokes of Genius 11: Finding Beauty (2019).
