ICA Miami invites you to celebrate its successful third season of Digital Commissions with curators Stephanie Seidel and Gean Moreno, who will critically examine new digital works of artists Sable Elyse Smith, Houston Cypress, Minia Biabiany, and Dara Friedman. Audience members are encouraged to participate in a 10-minute Q&A following the presentation.


About the Curators

Stephanie Seidel is Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami). Since joining ICA Miami in 2016, Seidel has curated a number of exhibitions, including the co-curation of “Chakaia Booker: The Observance,” “Allan McCollum: Works since 1969,” “Judy Chicago: A Reckoning,” and German artist Thomas Bayrle’s major retrospective “One Day on Success Street,” which marked the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the US. In 2019 she organized the symposium “They Failed to Remember Us: Expanding Intersectional Feminisms” at ICA Miami. Before joining ICA Miami, Seidel was interim director at the Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, Germany, as well as a curator for the commissioning project “25/25/25” for the Kunststiftung NRW (Arts Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia), Düsseldorf, where she worked with contemporary artists, such as Neïl Beloufa, Wade Guyton, Lena Henke, Sam Lewitt, Ken Okiishi, Pamela Rosenkranz, and Tercerunquinto. Stephanie also founded the project space Between Arrival & Departure in Düsseldorf where she organized commissions by Sam Anderson, Olga Balema, and Kelly Akashi, among others. She contributes regularly to art magazines including Art in America, CURA, and FlashArt.

Gean Moreno is Director of the Knight Art + Research Center at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. In this capacity, he oversees the Center’s operations and digital initiatives, develops pedagogical and discursive platforms, commissions publications, and long-term research projects. He is also part of ICA Miami’s curatorial team, and has recently curated exhibitions dedicated to the work of Terry Adkins, Larry Bell, and Ettore Sottsass. Moreno was an adviser to the 2017 Whitney Biennial and the 2018 Creative Time Summit. In 2008, he founded [NAME] Publications, a press dedicated to field-advancing art theory, and through which he has worked with numerous international institutions, including Kunsthalle Zurich and VanAbbe Museum. His texts have been included in various exhibition catalogues and anthologies, and he regularly contributes to various art publications, including e-flux journal, Kaleidoscope, and Art in America. He has lectured at numerous institutions, including New York University, Tyler School of Art, Goldsmiths, University of Florida, and Umea Art Academy. He has also been adjunct faculty at Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University. In Summer 2019, Verso released an anthology that he edited, In the Mind, But Not From There: Real Abstraction and Contemporary Art.
