Celebrating Narratives Spring 2023 Exhibition
Portals
This spring ICA’s Narratives Outreach Program brought Miami-based artist Sterling Rook to collaborate with middle and high school participants in partnership with Girl Power, Urgent Inc, and AMIKids Key Biscayne. Over the course of eight weeks Sterling explored identity using fiber art as a medium for self-representation. Embedded in the materials and techniques of fiber-craft are cultural means for expression of individuality and community. Throughout history different fiber art traditions have been used to create images and symbols as a way of expressing who people were and what they stood for, whether it be clothing, tapestry, or flags. Through the use of dyeing and fabric applique processes, students have created artworks that trace their individuality and connection to community. Each self-portrait is a reflection of a unique individual portal displayed by the unique patterns, in conjunction students also created a tapestry of identities that celebrates our differences and our shared humanity.
ICA Narratives is a community arts program with the goal of increasing self-esteem and critical thinking skills by allowing participants to express their own narrative through creative work.
Exhibition on view \ Saturday, May 6th – Sunday, May 14th
