Due to inclement weather, there’s been a venue change for First Fridays. The new venue is Paradise Plaza at 151 NE 41st Street 3rd Floor, Miami, FL 33137
This June, join us for a special Pride 2023 edition of First Fridays, the museum’s signature after-hours event series, featuring a headlining performance by openly queer rapper and vocalist Bbymutha.
Support for the night will include DJ sets from Pressurepoint.mp3 and SATURNSARii.

About Bbymutha
Famed for her myth-busting lyrics on sexuality, motherhood, and identity, Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee and now based in Atlanta – rapper and vocalist bbymutha is one of underground hip hop’s most daring and admired talents. She IS an absolute female force of nature. Sometimes vulgar, and never shy, bbymutha is always open, honest, and real.
Emerging with a series of self-released EP’s and singles, her track Rules went viral in 2017 and earned her praise from the likes of Erykah Badu, Björk, Earl Sweatshirt, SZA, Kehlani, actress Amandla Stenberg. While bbymutha fits into Southern rap’s legacy of originality via a refusal to conform to any coastal trends, choosing instead respective local flairs for self-expression and her non-apologetic attitude. The result is a soundscape all her own—a slow, ice-cool Chattanooga drawl rapping through the distorted and progressive production that gives her an artistic voice all her own — earning her spot on Pitchfork’s 10 Rappers to Watch 2019, Vibe’s Best Female Rap Albums of 2018, Pitchfork’s Best Rap Albums of 2018, & FACT Mag’s Rappers to Watch 2018.
Heavily influenced by Southern culture, bbymutha candidly blends her life experiences into hard-hitting raps — where she pointedly brandishes her sexuality in the face of respectability politics: unapologetically celebrating women for their ambition, savvy, sexuality, & sometimes vulgarity. Her sharp + provocative lyrics (openly sexual, feminist, & positive) are leisurely wrapped-around beats that are typically endemic to experimental and electronic corners of the internet.
Following a stellar series of self-released mixtapes, bbymutha’s 2018 standout EP Muthaz Day 3 saw her joining a new wave of underground female rappers, such as Noname, CupcakKe, Tierra Whack, and Rico Nasty, challenging a still male-dominated genre with genuine swagger.Strongly anticipated, bbymutha released her debut album Muthaland in September 2020. “It’s a deliriously entertaining, ambitious project from an artist operating at her peak”. – Pitchfork, 8.0. NPR named Muthaland in its top 50 albums of 2020, Pitchfork named Muthaland track “Roaches Don’t Die” one of the best rap songs of 2020, and Rolling Stone named “Pi$$ED OFF” one of the best rap music videos of 2020.
She has performed and collaborated with the likes of Bree Runway, Baby Tate, Earl Sweatshirt, SOPHIE, Rico Nasty, Kelis, Trina, Zelooperz, Fly Anakin, and Liv.E to name a few. In Fall 2021, she kicked off her debut headline tour in the UK & Europe to support her debut album Muthaland with sold-out shows in Berlin, Paris, Tbilisi, and the UK. In London, alone, she played to a frenzied crowd on 4 sold-out dates.bbymutha will return to the US stages to support her debut project Muthland in 2022 and is working on new boundary-pushing music.
