This fall ICA’s Narratives Outreach Program brought Miami-based artist Kayla Walker to collaborate with middle and high school participants in partnership with Girl Power, Urgent Inc, and AMIKids Key Biscayne.

Over the course of eight weeks students used mixed media collage to explore the concept of being a free agent, a person who is able to act freely without societal constructed restraints or barriers. Topics of Afrofuturism led the discussion of re-imagining ourselves and our environments. The process of re-imagining through art can be a tool to build a new more just world in our communities, our narratives, and our experiences.

ICA Narratives is a community arts program taught by Miami-based teaching artists with the goal to increase self-esteem and provide exposure and access to the arts that allows participants to express their own narrative through creative work.

“Unrestricted” is curated and organized by Kayla Walker, Teaching Artist and Jessica Helsinger, Narratives Site Coordinator.

Student Show on view \ Saturday, December 16th, 2023 – Thursday, January 4th, 2024 – Opening Reception on December 19 from 3-6 P.M
