Narratives Outreach Program – Kanaval Unmasked

This year, students explored Haitian Kanaval and mask making as a cultural art form. The connection between mask-making and identity is powerful—students express themselves in ways that challenge conventional perceptions or reflect personal narratives. In this way, the project presents self-discovery, reflection, and understanding the masks we wear in our everyday lives.

ICA Miami’s Narratives is a community arts program with the goal to increase self-esteem by providing exposure and access to the arts, allowing participants to express their own narrative through creative work. The program utilizes the theme of identity as a platform to allow participants to think critically about themselves, their place in the world around them, and their ability to express themselves.
