Marta Minujín: Dreamscape

The Miami Design District and The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) are pleased to present Marta Minujín: Dreamscape, the celebrated Argentine artist’s first public project in Miami. On view from March 18 to 31, 2025, the exhibition features two of Minujín’s monumental inflatable sculptures, inviting visitors into the immersive, multisensory environments that have defined her work for over six decades.

Rising 30 feet above Jungle Plaza, Sculpture of Desires is a monumental soft sculpture composed of intertwined arms, forming a luminous blow-up portal. On view for the first time, Emotional Candy is a labyrinthine structure of merging hallways designed to disorient and delight. Within both sculptures, ambient birdsong recordings encourage visitors to whisper their wishes into the vibrant, undulating forms. Their fluorescent patterns recall Minujín’s pioneering mattress sculptures from the mid-1960s—playful, multicolored installations meant to be entered and explored.

Born in Argentina in 1943, Marta Minujín is a leading figure of the 1960s and ’70s avant-garde, renowned for her groundbreaking work in happenings, performance, and media art. After famously incinerating her own works in The Destruction (1963), she turned to immersive environments with works like The Long Shot (1964) and Mayhem (1965) and became a forerunner in mass media art with Simultaneity in Simultaneity (1966). In 1983, her Parthenon of Books—a towering monument to censored literature—celebrated Argentina’s return to democracy. Today, her work remains a testament to the power of art to intensify experience, spark collective participation, and spread joy.

An opening celebration with the artist will take place on Tuesday, March 18, at 6 PM. Free and open to the public. RSVP HERE.
