“Art Lesson U Perform” is a workshop by performance artist Kalup Linzy. Using scenes from Kalup Linzy’s recent work and scenes from other earlier works, participants had the opportunity to act out characters under the direction and artistic leadership of Linzy. This exercise provided participants with unique insight into Linzy’s individual process, as well as the opportunity to explore issues investigated by Linzy’s work, particularly gender and identity.

About Kalup Linzy

Kalup Linzy (b. 1977, Clermont, Florida) is primarily known for his live performances, video works, and animation that invoke a satirical narrative inspired by soap operas and Hollywood melodramas to investigate stereotypes around sexual identity, race, and gender. His films have a deliberately DIY aesthetic and are, in turn, humorous and affecting. The Artist often stars in his own performances, inhabiting a range of characters—bewigged and in drag—who relate the quotidian and at times outrageous trials of everyday rural life. He employs humor to comment on icons of the New York art world and reality TV shows. More recently, Linzy has produced an album and performance piece with James Franco, created an opera that debuted at SFMOMA, and shot two music videos for the fashion line Proenza Schouler. Linzy currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
