Since 1906, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem has set the artistic scene in Israel whilst being the leading institution in the country. The history of Israeli art starts with the establishment of the school. This talk, “From Carpet Weavers to Transparent Architecture: 111 years of art and design education in Jerusalem,” led by the institution’s current president, Prof. Adi Stern, will portray the story of Bezalel, its unique spirit and its influential alumni. Amongst the issues that will be discussed are the impact and importance of localism in art education, art and design education in the 21st century and its implications on the new Bezalel campus in downtown Jerusalem, designed by renowned Tokyo-based architects SANAA.
