Friedrich Kunath: I’ll Romanticize This Later Panel Conversation
Program Presented by DMINTI, Nassima Foundation, and ICA Miami.
Fusing the visual language of German Romanticism with American pop culture, Friedrich Kunath (b. 1974, Chemnitz, Germany) explores longing, melancholy, and nostalgia with a wit that invites a smile even as it confronts the most vulnerable aspects of the human condition. Spread across the second floor of ICA Miami’s Expansion Space (formerly home to the de la Cruz Collection) from December 1, 2026 to January 22, 2027, I’ll Romanticize This Later foregrounds Kunath’s longstanding dialogue with German painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) and his recurring use of the Rückenfigur, alongside other themes and motifs that permeate his work.
In collaboration with DMINTI and Nassima Art Foundation, ICA Miami presents Kunath’s first solo exhibition in the United States, bringing together paintings, sculptures, and installations spanning the artist’s career, alongside a new immersive digital environment. Building on Kunath’s ongoing use of lyrics, titles, and other forms of text, the interactive space invites visitors to experiment directly with his language.
In addition to painting, sculpture, and installation, the exhibition features an interactive digital environment that invites visitors to experiment with Kunath’s ongoing use of lyrics, titles, and other forms of text.
A panel conversation between Friedrich Kunath and curator Klaus Biesenbach will take place at 11 a.m. EST on December 1, with an introduction by Alex Gartenfeld, Irma and Norman Executive Director and Chief Curator at ICA Miami.
The exhibition is curated by Nassima Art Foundation.
