The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, is pleased to present a one-day symposium in conjunction with the major survey exhibition “Zilia Sánchez: Topologías / Topologies,” which examines the work of Zilia Sánchez (b. 1926, Havana; lives and works in San Juan, Puerto Rico). A singular voice in postwar Latin American modernism and geometric abstraction, Sánchez has continuously experimented across a diverse range of styles and themes for over seven decades.

The symposium seeks to broaden perspectives on Sánchez, exploring the various artistic contexts where she has worked in Havana, New York, Madrid, and San Juan. Despite her prolific output, Sánchez’s work has been the subject of relatively few published texts to date, making this symposium an important opportunity to delve deeper into her contributions.

Invited speakers Alyson Cluck, PhD candidate in Art History, University of Maryland, Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, Associate Professor of Museum Studies and Art History and Director of the Northlight Gallery, Arizona State University, and Christina A. León, Assistant Professor of Literature, Duke University, will present their research on Sánchez’s extensive body of work, offering new insights into her artistic practices and situating her work within the broader frameworks of Latin American and American art.

Seating is limited and registration in advance is required.
