Collecting 101: Panel Discussion at PRIMARY
Join ICA Miami, PRIMARY, and ICA NEXT members for a conversation and Q&A with some of Miami’s premier art professionals, including gallerists, consultants, and auctioneers. Craft beer is provided courtesy of Concrete Beach Brewery.
Thinking of starting an art collection? Intimidated about approaching a gallerist? Mystified by the art market in general? From auction houses to private art consulting to operating a gallery, this panel discussion aims to demystify the process of owning contemporary art. Participants will learn how to research prospective artists, effectively interact with gallerists, set a realistic budget for purchasing work, and more. Members are encouraged participate in the conversation by asking a question.

Panelists
Valentina Garcia joined Phillips as a Specialist, Associate Vice President of Latin American Art, Miami, in March 2016. In her role, Ms. Garcia works with the Latin American team in New York to strengthen the company’s presence in Miami and Latin America. Prior to joining Phillips, Ms. Garcia worked at The Elkon Gallery, where she held the positions of Gallery Manager and Director in New York since 2004, and most recently served as Gallery Liaison based in Miami. She previously worked for Neuhoff Gallery, and in Sotheby’s Latin American Art Department and Miami office. Ms. Garcia was born in Miami and received her degree in Art History from Marymount Manhattan College in New York.
Jimena Guijarro is an art advisor at Guijarro de Pablo Art Consulting who is passionate about introducing young collectors, private and corporate clients to the art world. Among her most recent projects is the Young Collectors Desk, an initiative that aims to guide the next generation of collectors through corporate and institutional partnerships.
Cristina Gonzalez is a partner at PRIMARY with gallerist Books Bischof and Miami-based artist Typoe. PRIMARY explores and promotes various forms of aesthetic expression from both established and emerging contemporary artists, within the gallery context and beyond. PRIMARY works to expand the expectations of the contemporary art world, and to foster new, unexpected discourse between artists and the public.
