ICA Narratives: I Am, We Are
The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami presents I Am, We Are, a multimedia exhibition exploring identity through the eyes of the Miami community developed by the ICA Narratives (ICAN) Outreach Program. On Friday, December 11, 2015 from 4–6pm, ICA will host an opening reception where guests will meet the both the artist and participants to discuss their work in relation to the self and the community at large. The exhibition closes on Sunday, December 13, 2015, coinciding with ICA and Miami Design District Family Day from 1–3 pm.
ICAN is an offsite outreach program that aims to increase self-esteem, critical thinking skills, and access to contemporary art; as well as to empower social, cultural and gender-specific identity of each participant. ICAN connects contemporary artists whose practice investigates these social issues to teens and young adults in partnership with schools and community organizations.
This fall, ICA Resident Artist Jayme Gershen worked with local organizations Hands2Help, Urgent Inc., Breakthrough Miami, Lotus House, Miami Children’s Initiative, and South Florida CARES Mentoring Movement to create multimedia work around the participants’ identity, community, and culture. Through ICA Narratives, Gershen aimed to support her students’ realization of the power and importance of their own identities.
About Jayme Gershen
Jayme Gershen is a multimedia storyteller focused on identity through the use of photo, video, sound, and text. She immerses herself in the lives of others through a mix of documentary projects and art-based fiction. Jayme uses humor and intimacy to focus on second chances and a sense of place. She is currently working on several projects including a film about immigration identities, a multimedia piece about the Cuba/Miami divide and a photo series on who we are, once we cannot remember ourselves.
