ICA Miami’s Ronni and Andrew Smulian Family Internship Program


ICA Miami internship program aims to address historical race and gender gaps in museums and specifically connect underserved audiences to the museum. We are focused on attracting and preparing college-level students from underrepresented backgrounds for internships or jobs in the field of museums and community engagement. Our internship program offers participants an opportunity to work with our community partners during an exciting and critical moment of growth for the institution. Over a 10-week period, the students will experience hands-on work with our community partners and develop an extremely valuable, comprehensive project backed with recommendations and research. By project’s end, students will gain career-enhancing experience, have a broader understanding of the impact museum programs have on the community, and learn how to quantify data gathered from evaluations to develop high-quality,actionable reports to help the institution continue to engage underserved communities.


Selected interns will participate in a 10-week program for approximately 10-12 hours per week. Interns will receive a stipend of $1500 for the entire program. Selected interns will also receive reimbursement for transportation costs.


Eligibility

Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply for ICA Miami’s internships. All applicants will need to submit a resume and cover letter addressing the specific internship to which they are applying.

In addition, undergraduate applicants will need to provide a recommendation letter from a professor, faculty member or supervisor familiar with their academic performance or work ethic and problem-solving skills. Moreover, recommendation letters should discuss how the applicant’s skills and experience would contribute to their desired internship.

ICA Miami internships may count towards academic credit. Selected interns should review this
process with their college or university and provide ICA Miami with the documentation needed for credit. International and out-of-state candidates may apply, however, ICA Miami will not provide support for international visas, lodging or transportation.

Timeframe/Deadlines

*To participate, candidates must be available for the entirety of the internship session.

For Fall Session, completed applications with recommendation letters must be submitted no later than Monday, September 12, 2022. Incomplete applications or submissions received after this date will not be accepted. Selected interns for the fall session will begin the program Monday, September 26, 2022.

For Winter/Spring Session, completed applications with recommendation letters must be submitted no later than Friday, December 9. Selected interns for the winter/spring session will begin the program January 23, 2023.

Specific days and time will be mutually agreed upon between the intern and Community
Programs Coordinator.

POSITIONS

Community Engagement Interns – Social Justice

The Community Engagement-Social Justice internship in the Education department at ICA Miami is designed to provide an overview of the skills and responsibilities needed for community building, socially engaged arts practices, arts administration, and production for a range of audiences for a museum setting and in local communities. The internship will include administrative, arts producing, and teaching experiences with diverse audiences.

The intern will work directly with ICA Miami’s Narratives Community Engagement Program. Narratives is an arts program that works with community partners with the goal of increasing self-esteem and critical thinking skills taught by Miami-based teaching artists. The program utilizes the theme of identity as a platform to allow participants to feel empowered and express their own narrative through creative work. The objective of the work is to provide participants with the tools and framework to think critically about themselves, their place in the world around them, and their ability to express themselves.

Two interns will be assigned to assist with their designated community partner site.

The intern will provide classroom assistance and support for the teaching artist assigned to the two community partners including but not limited to attendance reporting, supply management, and project preparation. The intern will also primarily be responsible for the evaluation of the program and project; how the project incorporates social justice principles and how those principles and projects impact the participants. Intern will be responsible for submitting a report with recommendations on improvement and better engagement with participants. The intern is part of the Education department and team, which may require additional program assistance as well as participation in team meetings and ideation sessions.

Responsibilities

The Community Engagement Interns – Social Justice will actively participate and perform duties in some of the following functional areas:
• Research and interviewing participants and community partner leaders/contacts
• Identifying key social justice principles tied into the project
• Assist in writing reports for Narratives program
• Program and teaching artist support
• Supporting in managing and preparing of supplies
• Administrative assistance on organizing reports and evaluation data.

Fall Session 2022
• September 26-December 9, 2022 (excluding Thanksgiving week)
• 10-12 hours per week
Winter/Spring Session 2023
• January 23-April 7 (excluding spring break)
• 10-12 hours per week

Minimum Qualifications/Education, Training, and Traits

• College student, sophomore or above majoring in either social work, sociology, art/arts education or counselor education
• Experience or strong interest in social justice, community development, detention and/or post detention programs
• Interest in either contemporary art, arts education or art making
• Experience or interest in working with diverse audiences including individuals with disabilities
• Ability to work independently, as well as within a team
• Dependable and punctual. Able to meet at community partner sites
• Ability and willingness to work outside of traditional working hours
• Must maintain confidentiality of all information
• Strong writing skills (writing sample must be submitted)
• Working understanding of cloud computing, including Google Apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc)
• Ability to think creativity and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and creatively demanding work environment
• Strong administrative and organizational skills
• Resourcefulness and exceptional communication skills are a plus
• Patience, empathy, and strong listening skills are a must
• A background check is required
• Proof of vaccination is required

Physical demands: This position requires standing, walking and climbing stairs, bending, and stretching, and physical stamina to lift a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted.

Work Environment: Work will be performed at community partner sites all throughout Miami Dade and Broward county.
