Passage – in the wake of the world is an ongoing transdisciplinary project conceived by artist Angela Lyn (Lugano) in collaboration with composer Jesse Bannister (London) and choreographer Durante Verzola (Miami). The project launched in May 2023 at Chambers ArtFarm in Salt Point, New York.

The piece unfolds from a large wooden crate containing twenty made-to-measure paintings by Lyn, inspired by the century-old Himalayan cedar trees and the landscape of Lake Lugano seen from the artist’s studio. In a metaphorical narrative, the crate itself is displayed as a transformed sailboat carrying two dancers as passengers. Driven to survive, the passengers leave the vessel, their encounters triggering memories and discoveries of a life they have lost. Stranded in a state of amnesia, the dancers interact with the paintings, as their journey becomes a metamorphosis of dreams and realities in an uncertain world.

Bringing together different artistic disciplines and artists and performers of various ages and cultural backgrounds, the piece seeks to re-envision modes of connection and understanding through art as a transformational vehicle. “Angela Lyn’s Passage – in the wake of the world . . . is an artistic inquiry of uncertainties and fragilities, fears and hopes, contradictions and paradoxes of the present times,” writes Giaco Schiesser, professor emeritus, Zurich University of the Arts.

Angela Lyn is based in Lugano, Switzerland. Her work includes painting, sculpture, installation, video, and text. Lyn has been experimenting with music, dance, and performance collaborations in exhibitions in London, Milan, and at the LAC Lugano since 2015. The artist’s work is held in private and museum collections internationally. The hybridity of her cultural origin is a source for her inquiry into what connects and separates us.

Jesse Bannister is a musician and composer based in London. Combining his knowledge of classical Indian music with jazz, Bannister creates new forms of music, fusing his Eastern roots with the experience of growing up in the United Kingdom. Bannister has participated in major music festivals and performs internationally. He is currently pursuing a PhD at York University, United Kingdom, researching the impact of music on our well-being.

Durante Verzola is a choreographer currently on staff with the Miami City Ballet. He has choreographed works for Miami City Ballet, New York City Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, and more throughout the United States. His work has been shown at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University. Verzola works to expand the vocabulary and reach of classical ballet into today’s ever-changing world.
