In this course, students will reflect upon and anaylyze Michel Majerus’ fusion of different art styles and dynamic imagery as related to art, advertising, and pop culture. Students will appropriate images to investigate this process for themselves and to make connections with the media saturated world in which they live.

About Michel Majerus

Michel Majerus’ career was brief but prolific. Born in Luxembourg, Michel Majerus (1967 – 2002) lived and worked in Berlin until November of 2002, when he died in a plane crash.

He created art in the form of painting, digital media, and imagery for a skateboard ramp. Majerus drew inspiration from popular culture, video games, digital imagery, corporate logos, film and television to express his views. Majerus was fascinated by transformation, speed, technology, youth culture, and art history, all of which are reflected in his art.

His artistic influences, many of whom he references in his paintings, include Frank Stella, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Willem de Kooning.
