ICA Miami presents a new site-specific commission by the Brooklyn-based artist Naudline Pierre for the museum’s three-story stairwell. This is Pierre’s largest work to date and sees the artist exploring epic scale and dynamic spatial context. The installation comprises a sequence of monumental paintings on canvas depicting water, nymphs, and scenes of bathing, which unfold gradually across the stairwell’s vertical expanse. Extending Pierre’s depictions of ethereal recurring figures and episodic storytelling, the commission invites viewers to encounter her imagined worlds as an unfolding narrative in which connections emerge gradually across the paintings.
Throughout her work in painting, Pierre conjures otherworldly realms inhabited by celestial beings, mythical figures, and expansive landscapes that draw on fantasy, religious iconography, and personal mythology. In her luminous paintings that center devotion, tenderness, and transformation, Pierre imagines spaces where acts of care, intimacy, and renewal become possible. In this new commission, water becomes a site of reverie and imagination, linking the paintings through the scenes that unfold across the stairwell’s vertical architecture.
Naudline Pierre (b. 1989, Leominster, Massachusetts) received her MFA from the New York Academy of Art and her BFA from Andrews University. She has presented solo exhibitions at the Drawing Center, New York, and the Dallas Museum of Art, and forthcoming presentations include the Akron Art Museum and the Parrish Art Museum. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at institutions including MoMA PS1, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Palais de Tokyo, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and Prospect.5 New Orleans. Pierre’s work is held in the collections of ICA Miami; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Pérez Art Museum Miami; and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, among others. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
