ICA Speaks: Jorge Pardo will take place at Palm Court in partnership with the Miami Design District.

The Institute of Contemporary Art presents ICA Speaks, a series of lectures highlighting artists from the museum’s permanent collection. ICA Miami welcomes Jorge Pardo, a sculptor whose body of work reflects the complex relationships between architecture, sculpture, design, painting, and drawing.

About Jorge Pardo

Jorge Pardo (b. 1963, Havana, Cuba) frequently blurs the lines that separate disciplines, presenting a fundamental challenge to the relationship between artwork and viewer. Characterized by this dynamic interaction, Pardo’s oeuvre invites audience expectations to define the way which each work is perceived and interpreted.

Pardo creates sculptural works that often take the form of large-scale projects. For his work 4166 Sea View Lane (1998) the artist designed and constructed a house as part of an invitation from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles to stage a solo exhibition. For Project (2000), Pardo undertook a renovation of the Dia Art Foundation’s space in New York. In 2008, Pardo redesigned and reinstalled LACMA’s Latin American art galleries, creating a conceptually rigorous and aesthetically refined space that recontextualizes the collection’s ancient artifacts through an immersive environment. One of his most comprehensive and ambitious works to date, Gesamtkunstwerk Tecoh (2006-2011) is a sprawling seventeenth-century Mexican hacienda restored and outfitted by the artist.

Jorge Pardo’s fusion of the functional and sculptural have lead to numerous worldwide exhibitions as well as public and private commissions throughout his career. Pardo has been the subject of comprehensive solo shows at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2010); K21, Düsseldorf (2009); the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (2007); the Fundació la Caixa, Barcelona (2004); the Dia Art Foundation, New York (2003), and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1998). He currently lives and works in Mexico and New York.
