First Fridays – Premiere of ICA Performs: Angela Lyn: Passage – in the wake of the world
Passage – in the wake of the world is an ongoing transdisciplinary project conceived by artist Angela Lyn (Lugano) in collaboration with composer Jesse Bannister (London) and choreographer Durante Verzola (Miami). The project launched in May 2023 at Chambers ArtFarm in Salt Point, New York.
The piece unfolds from a large wooden crate containing twenty made-to-measure paintings by Lyn, inspired by the century-old Himalayan cedar trees and the landscape of Lake Lugano seen from the artist’s studio. In a metaphorical narrative, the crate itself is displayed as a transformed sailboat carrying two dancers as passengers. Driven to survive, the passengers leave the vessel, their encounters triggering memories and discoveries of a life they have lost. Stranded in a state of amnesia, the dancers interact with the paintings, as their journey becomes a metamorphosis of dreams and realities in an uncertain world.
Bringing together different artistic disciplines and artists and performers of various ages and cultural backgrounds, the piece seeks to re-envision modes of connection and understanding through art as a transformational vehicle. “Angela Lyn’s Passage – in the wake of the world . . . is an artistic inquiry of uncertainties and fragilities, fears and hopes, contradictions and paradoxes of the present times,” writes Giaco Schiesser, professor emeritus, Zurich University of the Arts.
